Volunteers play an essential role in the workings of our hospital by enhancing the services offered and assisting staff in providing exceptional patient and family-centered care. Volunteering can give one insight into the complex workings of the hospital and can be beneficial in building experience towards future careers in healthcare.  

Various volunteer opportunities through our LWDH Helping Hands program are available to community members
over the age of 16 who have a passion for giving back to the community:

  • Students working towards their 40-hour volunteer requirement
  • One-off volunteers
  • Kenora’s seasonal population
  • Members of the community who want to give back

Your hospital is currently seeking representatives to participate in the following committees:

Board of Directors

The Lake of the Woods District Hospital Board of Directors are responsible for the governance of the hospital and oversight of its management in accordance with the  Public Hospitals Act/Regulations of Ontario and the Corporations Act of Ontario.  The length of the term will be for one (1) to three (3 years).  There is no remuneration provided, but the Board of Directors are personally rewarded through new knowledge, acquisition of new skills, and the acknowledgment that they are making a valuable contribution to the community.  Previous board experience, knowledge of Ontario’s health care system, and knowledge of Indigenous culture and vulnerable populations are valuable assets.  The Board of Directors acknowledges diversity, equity, and inclusion as a priority for Lake of the Woods District Hospital.

Quality, Patient Safety, and Risk Management Committee (QPSRMC)

This committee meets at minimum six times annually and the estimated time commitment is approximately 10 hrs.  QPSRMC performs the functions under the Excellent Care for All Act, 2010 (ECFAA), and assists the Board of Directors in the performance of its governance role for monitoring all aspects of the quality of patient care and services.  Quality is defined as “doing the right thing, at the right time, in the right way, for the right person – and having the best possible results” (Agency for Health Care Research and Quality).

Patient & Family Advisory Committee

This Committee membership is made up of people who have had a recent experience as a patient or as a family member of a patient who has received care at the in our hospital.  These members partner with LWDH staff and physicians to provide direct input into policies, programs and practices which affect LWDH patient care and services.

A strategic goal central to the LWDH is to provide a consistently excellent patient experience for all. Hearing the voices of patients, families and caregivers is essential to improving the patient and family experience. Integrating the patient’s point of view, perspective and experience into service and quality improvements across the

organization will help to ensure the delivery of high quality care.
