Description:
Installed at LWDH in 2002, the telemedicine program uses computerized videoconference technology to provide patient consults with specialist physicians located across Ontario and Manitoba. Local physicians refer patients to the network and appointments with specialists are scheduled through a central booking site. Appointments are then done by videoconference mode with the patient at the local site and the specialist physician at a remote site. This saves the patient and family the cost, time, and inconvenience of travel to visit a specialist. The OTN technology also enables physicians and hospital staff to participate in ongoing continuing education events. Regional meetings can also be scheduled through the network. Patient appointments are scheduled for Monday to Friday 0700-1600hrs but educational events or meetings can occur during evening/weekend hours.
