Docks and Grounds

Kenora is unique!

Lake of the Woods District Hospital is one of only a small handful of hospitals in North America that is accessible by water.  There aren't many places where a person could boat to get groceries, go to the bank, the farmer’s market,  meet friends for lunch and, when needed, quickly access the hospital directly from the water! Lake of the Woods District Hospital and the hospitals which came before it in Kenora, have sat on a spectacular waterfront location on historic Tunnel Island for 100+ years.

Access from the lake when you need it most

The Lake of the Woods District Hospital Emergency Use Dock is located very close to our hospital.  Should you need to access this dock, first dock your boat safely and do not move the injured or sick person if possible. Please wait for trained first responders to avoid further injuries. To access EMS services, simply pick up the receiver in the telephone box located near the dock. You will be automatically connected & an ambulance will be dispatched to the dock to assist those in need.

Boat to work!

Hospital non-emergency docks also allow staff who reside on the lake in the summer the unique opportunity to boat directly to work (a definite advantage when recruiting!). These docks also offer a peaceful spot for staff to eat lunch or take a break, they are located down the steps on the west side of the hospital.

Hospital Grounds

Lake of the Woods District Hospital and the hospitals that came before have all been located on shores of beautiful Lake of the Woods. Our St. Joseph grounds, located just steps from the hospital, offer a beautiful waterfront, park-like setting that is enjoyed by both hospital staff and the community at various events.

Self-identify as Anishinaabe or Indigenous

Indigenous Self-Identification

All patients registered at Lake of the Woods District Hospital are asked if they would like to Self-Identify as Anishinaabe or Indigenous.

Why Self-Identify?

Everyone’s health is important. To better serve the Indigenous population in Northwestern Ontario, we have developed the self-identification process to better understand who our patients are and how we can do things differently. The goals of this process are:

  • To enrich the patient experience, improve health services, and identify areas of need in the health care system
  • To provide data to measure the effectiveness of health care
  • To improve the quality of care for Indigenous patients

Who can self-identify?

All people with Indigenous ancestry are encouraged to self-identify. Indigenous identity is defined in the Canadian Constitution Act (1982), S. 35 (2).  Indigenous refers to Canada’s original people and includes:

Status: the legal status of a person who is registered as an Indian under the Indian Act.

Non-Status: refers to people who identify as Indians but who are not entitled to Indian Registration under the Indian Act.

Métis: people of mixed Indigenous and Euro-American ancestry.

Inuit: refers to Canada’s original people whose homeland is the Canadian Arctic that includes portions of the three Territories: Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut, in addition to Northern Quebec and Northern Labrador.
