Description:
Hemodialysis Department
The local dialysis unit was established in 1991 and is considered a satellite site of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre Dialysis Program. The Kenora Dialysis Unit has a formal established relationship with Manitoba Renal Network Program.
The Registered nurses in the Kenora Unit receive specialized training and certification from the Manitoba Renal Network. The local unit provides treatment six days a week for a total of twenty patients. The unit operates Monday to Saturday from 0630 to 1830 hours. It is located on the main floor down the hall from the Admitting Department.
Acute Hemodialysis starts are considered locally provided in Kenora but is based on the complexity of the patient’s acuity so that we ensure it does not exceed our ability to provide safe and appropriate care. The Dialysis program promotes a holistic approach to caring for people with kidney disease, their families and their communities. The Dialysis team works in conjunction with the members of the interdisciplinary team of healthcare professionals. The dialysis team includes: a team of two nephrologists (Dr. Watson and Dr. Silverberg), registered nurses, unit assistants and a ward clerk.
Multi-Care Kidney Clinic
The Multi-Care Kidney Clinic provides service once a month with the ultimate goal of delaying advancement from Stage IV Renal Failure to the need for renal replacement therapy. The patients receive focused care directed at their individual complex needs from and inter-disciplinary team comprised of a Nephrology Nurse, Certified Diabetes Educator, Pharmacist, Dietitian and a Nephrologist. Surveillance is scheduled according to individual needs. Follow up educational appointments are available to support the patients as they navigate their journey with chronic kidney disease.
Nephrology Clinic
Dr. Watson and Dr. Silverberg provide General Nephrology clinic services during their monthly visits to Lake of the Woods District Hospital. In addition, the doctors provide inpatient nephrology consults during the time they are in the community and are available by telephone consults for any nephrology related questions that health professionals may have. The doctors are able to follow up with Peritoneal Dialysis patients as well as Home Hemodialysis patients during their monthly visits, thus saving the patients need to travel to Thunder Bay. A registered nurse and the Dialysis unit ward clerk support the physicians in the delivery of services for the General Nephrology clinic patient population.
