Preparation Requirements for Ultrasound Examinations
Abdomen – Gallbladder / General
• Fat free supper the night before.
• Nothing to eat/drink 12 hours prior to the exam.
Abdomen - Liver and/or Pancreas
• Nothing by mouth for 12 hours before examination.
Abdomen - Kidneys and/or Spleen
• No fasting required.
Abdomen and Pelvis (if both exams are being done)
• Fat free supper the night before.
• Nothing to eat/drink after midnight.
• One hour prior to appointment drink 40 ounces of water (4 large glasses) so that your bladder is full on arrival.
Pelvis or Obstetrics/Gynecology
• It is important for the patient to have a full bladder. Patient should drink 40 oz of water one hour prior to the examination.
• Bladder should not be emptied until after the examination.
Late Pregnancy
• Drink 20 oz of water one hour before the examination.
GYN / EV
• Empty bladder.
Prostate
• Patient is to pick up suppository at drugstore.
• Use suppository 4 hours prior to ultrasound appointment.
• Get PSA blood work done with results prior to appointment. The blood work has to be within 3 months of scheduled appointment.
There is no special preparation for the following procedures:
• Thyroid, Breast, Scrotum, Carotid, Cardiac
